Love is a choice

Love is a choice…

Now I have said this to so many people and only a few have either agreed or listened to me. Truth is….love is indeed a choice. We have each received the capacity to love and do so unconditionally. Now there’s a word that scares most grown folk…unconditional. What does that mean exactly? Well, just what it says…without condition – no limits and no boundaries.

So what do I mean when I say we can choose to love? Well I make it a practice to not speak of what I do not do myself… and this I have been doing for a while now. How do I know I love you? From the very specific description of what love is. I am sure you have heard of it before.

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Cor 13:4-7

When I look at this list, I find that love is not all that daunting….and that, with very little effort, I can choose to do these things for everybody I come into contact with.

Now quite a few people have questioned me in this, saying, how can you just ‘decide’ to love a complete stranger? And how DO you know that you actually love them indeed?

My answer? I just do. Why? Simply because I can.

Another question that has come up….How do you know that you actually love someone?

I have a means of testing myself. Granted, I have a VERY active imagination and can, with alarming vividness, place myself in any situation. (Now isn’t that handy as a writer ? 😀 ) So, imagination in tow, I place myself in situations that involve the people I profess to love without condition.

Think about it for a moment…..is there someone you can honestly say you love? What would you do for that person? How far are you willing to go? Would you die for them?
Those are the kind of questions I ask myself. And when I can answer YES to all of them, I know, I have passed my own test. I know that I love without condition and without regret…..(more about how I stumbled on that another time)
This is how I choose to love anyone and everyone, whether I have met them or not…..

All of this said, it is important to note that you cannot truly love others until you know how to love yourself….
